In this episode we talk all about achieving your goals. We’ve all been encouraged to set goals, but rarely do we get taught how to achieve those goals.

  • We start this episode with me throwing some serious shade at resolutions. I don’t like them, I don’t believe in them, I think they’re worthless.

  • I then segue into throwing a bit of shade at setting goals, but certainly less shade than I gave to resolutions.

  • And then I get into plans and planning. You see a goal without a plan is a wish. The plan is what gets you there.

  • At this point I take a deep dive into explaining how I converted this podcast from a goal into a plan and then that plan into reality. Sure, it was a bit indulgent, but it was a perfect example to explain converting a goal into a plan.

  • Now, armed with the proper knowledge we look at 2019 and choose ONE thing to focus on. One thing to improve, or learn, or pursue. Just one. Why? Because if you chase two rabbits you’ll catch neither.

  • We write our way through this one thing. What I mean by that is we journal about it and address our fears, doubts, insecurities, and discover the WHY behind it all. Why do this? Why is it important? Having a solid WHY gives the goal purpose and meaning.

  • Now we deconstruct our task. Perhaps the most important part of planning is this deconstruction. Take your goal and reduce it to its smallest possible parts. Think of a piece of furniture you buy at Ikea. The assembled furniture is your goal. But it comes in 757 pieces and you have to assemble it. But there’s instructions so you’re okay. The instructions are your plan. They guide you on your task of turning 757 individual parts into a single finished product. Deconstruction of your goal is critical.

  • And once we have our deconstructed goal we can order the individual tasks and requirements in the necessary order and make a schedule or timeline. Through journaling and deconstruction we remain on track because we’ve already anticipated where we’ll get tripped up and accounted for them.

  • Congratulations, you now have a plan. Stick to your plan. Fall back on your plan. Trust the plan. 2019 is the year of the plan.
